Why the Formation of Healing Minds

For the last few years, Raechelle Turner and Ashley Haugen discovered major flaws in mental illness healthcare. Hitting close to home for both of them, they decided that action needed to taken to begin rectifying this problem.

The Problem They Discovered

When Turner and Haugen were talking to people in their communities, mental illness was a recurring factor that tainted their lives.  Mental illness not only affected those suffering, but also those around them.  When Turner and Haugen increased their outreach, they discovered the frequency for each person to repeatedly interact with someone directly affected.

Mental illnesses affected virtually everyone.

While those suffering surfaced often, rational resolutions to the problem did not.  People's search for information, resources, and solutions to the dieases resulted in ultimately absent findings.  People were lost in finding answers.

Turner and Haugen set out to investigate the availaility of information from books, mental health professionals, and internet websites.  Some books provided good research, but took great effort to track down.  The abundance of those published created confusion as to which one would be most relevant and helpful for the individual.  Furthermore, searching through books require an effort level that often is absent from a mentally ill individual.  Turner and Haugen set out to consult mental health professionals and found they lacked in resources beyond their office.  They also felt a sense of lack acknowledgement of urgency and severity of the situations and mental states.  Although abundant, information regarding treatments found on websites often contradicted one another, questioning the credibility and trust as a source.

Treatment is expensive.

The financial implications of treatments, such as perscriptions and therapy, fostered harsh realities.  The people without insurance were trapped.    Those with insurance encountered difficulties when they realized the limited mental health care coverage offered by their policy.

Beginning the Fight for the Justice of the Mentally Ill

Turner and Haugen concluded society's lack of attention and available resources were unacceptable and have ruined lives.  They found that dreams were crushed, families destroyed, bank accounts emptied, and the will to live disappeared.  The need for a non-profit to help individuals heal was essential and Healing Minds was formed in August of 2005.

Healing Minds is tackling the problems by creating educational awareness, building a community network, and providing financial assistance.

No one should go through the process alone or without the necessary tools to heal.
